Extra Credit Opportunity #2

Watch the prezi below and post a brief paragraph in which you:
* explain what made the most sense to you and what didn't
* discuss the advantages and disadvantages of open source learning
* argue that school should either stay the way it is or become open source.

  1. What I’m getting from this is that the open source school is a place where you can choose your own path on which you would like to learn on (pick your own guide, subjects, etc.) but I’m a still a little iffy on how it works. If the Open Source isn’t online education, then where exactly are you learning and getting information from? It’s hard to say what the advantages and disadvantages would be because I don’t really understand how it works. One major advantage would of course be being able to choose your own courses and what you want to do. But what kind of information and the quality of it I still don’t know. It seems like one of those things you have to experience to fully understand. I don’t believe an online school would make people antisocial, but it does seem like it would make the teacher student connection more difficult and less important. I don’t think schools should have to become Open Source, but I do believe the option should be there. So many students, including me, would love to look into other subjects, even if it is just to dibble dabble in them a bit. All in all, Open Source seems like a good experience, and I like what it offers, I’d just like to know how it works a little more.

  2. I think the open source school is where you can choose what you want to do and where you want to go in life. I don't get how one would get all that information without having a teacher there to really explain it all. I didn't get to read everything that came along because the slides were moving a little fast. I think that is a good idea but im still a little weird about not having everything explained clearly.

  3. During this presentation I definatley understood when it talked about re-evaluating yourself and

preparing for the future with the 5 F's. Although I was a little cautious when it came to talking about

how you can pay over 200,000 American dollars for a the highest rating college and still end up no

better then where you started 200,000 dollars ago. But of all moments of this presentation my favorite

was when watching that little girl explore every aspect of life so beautifully and learning in natures

planned ways. Thus, bringing me to the conclusion that school should become an open source. It

would give millions the opportunity to be who they are and learn yet again with that child like fashion.

Though I also believe that courses (such as Dr. Preston's) should be required because it gives us the

push most of humanity needs to better themselves in life. Some advantages include a open mind and

an exploration like no other. Yet some disadvantages include not being able to get as much help as you

would be able to acquire within school walls. And also not being able to better prepare yourself for

what lies ahead. Though sometimes I wonder “ Is school really bettering us for the future?” or “ Why

do the exponents of shapes matter?” , for “What are we really learning if not life, like we should?”
